How to Set a Thanksgiving Table That Feels Special

Thanksgiving is the one meal of the year where the table itself is part of the celebration. Here’s how to set one that looks thoughtful without hours of work.

Measure your table first

For a seated dinner, choose a tablecloth with 6–12 inches of drop on each side. A 60×84 inch cloth suits most tables that seat six; a 6-ft folding table needs about 30×72 inches plus drop.

Layer a runner

A runner over a solid or plaid tablecloth adds depth and defines a centerpiece area. Keep centerpieces low so guests can see each other.

Pick a simple palette

Tartan plaid, warm neutrals and a touch of orange or gold feel seasonal without clashing with food.

Plan for spills

Choose washable fabrics, and keep a few napkins near the gravy. For kids’ tables or big gatherings, disposable plastic tablecloths make clean-up easy.
